Science Talks - H2 Internal Hygiene™ Validation

A recent breakthrough study published in December 2025 in Redox Biology provides the strongest validation yet for Molecular Hydrogen Internal Hygiene™.

It also upgrades molecular hydrogen (H2) from a passive "soap" molecule to an active H2 Cellular Cleansing Protocol, validating the systemic and lasting cleanliness.

This research demonstrates that H2 is biologically active and identifies the Rieske Iron-Sulf Protein (RISP) as the primary target of molecular hydrogen, confirming that H2 does not only "wash away" most toxic free radicals as a selective antioxidant, as it was previously considered biologically inert.

It also flips a specific switch (RISP) that forces the cell to perform its own structural repairs, effectively validating the concept of systemic, lasting cleanliness. 

The New Mechanism: H2 - An Active "Cellular Cleansing Agent"

  • The Switch: RISP Interaction
    Instead of randomly floating, H2 enters the mitochondria and binds specifically to the Rieske Iron-Sulfur Protein (RISP) in Complex III. This is the precise “trigger” moment the "cleansing cycle" is activated.

  • The Signal: Complex III Suppression
    This binding to RISP temporarily suppresses mitochondrial activity, creating a specific "maintenance signal."

  • The Response: UPRmt Activation
    The suppression of Complex III triggers a mild stress signal in the cell that activates the long-term protective Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response (UPRmt). This is the cellular equivalent of a long-term "deep maintenance" crew repairing mitochondria-damaged structures.

  • The Result: Sustained Resilience
    Even after H2 leaves the body (up to 60 minutes), the UPRmt repair crew keeps working for days, leading to increased resilience, improved mitochondrial function, and elevated antioxidant capacity.

This special new mechanism may explain why H2 affects multiple signaling pathways and nearly all organ systems (pleiotropic effects) and acts as a redox modulator that can sometimes increase oxidative stress to induce protective, adaptive responses (paradoxical effects).

Hygiene – The Art of Health

The origin of the word “hygiene”: Late 16th century (1670s), via French “hygiène” from modern Latin “hygieina,” ultimately from Greek “hugieinē technē,” meaning “the art of health,” from “hugiēs,” meaning “healthy.”

The word “hygiene” comes from Hygieia (or Hygeia), the ancient Greek goddess of health, cleanliness, and sanitation, for disease prevention and wellness.

She was the daughter of Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine.

A notable reference to Hygieia’s role as a goddess of health is the Hippocratic Oath, an oath of ethics historically taken by physicians.

What Is Hygiene?

Hygiene is a set of practices performed to preserve health, especially through cleanliness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases.”

You can see a broader description of Hygiene practices at all levels (personal, medical, social, environmental, industrial, etc.) as preventive measures to maintain health and reduce the incidence and spread of germs leading to diseases. 

1980s: 133+ Years Until Mandatory Handwashing in the U.S.

Handwashing was first proposed in 1847 by Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865), considered the father of hand hygiene, a Hungarian physician and scientist of German descent, an early pioneer of antiseptic procedures in maternities, which brought him the description as the “savior of mothers.”

Despite his research and the overwhelming empirical evidence, his proposal conflicted with the long-established medical and scientific opinion of the time and was rejected by the medical community because he couldn’t offer a theoretical explanation for his observations.

Some doctors were even offended and refused to believe the suggestion that their hands could transmit diseases.

His name is used today as the Semmelweis reflex/effect, a metaphor for the human tendency to reject new evidence or ideas that conflict with existing beliefs, norms, or established paradigms, even when supported by facts.

The basic forms of the germ theory of disease were proposed as early as 1546 by Girolamo Fracastoro, but the foundation for the germ theory was demonstrated and confirmed in the 1860s by Louis Pasteur, giving Semmelweis’s observations the theoretical and scientific explanation.

Another major pioneer of handwashing and general hygiene for health was Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of modern professional nursing.

She also founded the world’s first nursing school, the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (1860).

Through her writing, she was a prominent and effective advocate for the importance of handwashing for nurses and other hygiene practices in British army hospitals.

110 Years Until Adopting Handwashing

Then the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the first national hand hygiene guidelines, making handwashing an official part of American healthcare practice.
